In the second instalment of our Meet the Team series, we’re excited to introduce you to Calandra, our Head of HR and Credit Control. We’ve asked Calandra to share a bit about herself and her role, giving you an inside look at what she does in the construction industry and what drives her.
Tell us a little about yourself and your role
My role is a mixed bag! I spend a lot of my time managing the debt book as I am a credit controller at Rockthorn. I do ISO compliance and also have HR responsibilities. I am on the accounts team, too! I have recently done Mental Health First Aid training so that I can be here for my colleagues if they ever need a conversation or any kind of primary intervention in case of an emergency.
What do you like doing outside of work?
I have a daughter who just turned 12 and a dog that take up a lot of my time! I like spending time with my friends and family and exploring new places in the UK and abroad with my partner and daughter. I also like to decorate and keep our little house neat and tidy. We are going skiing with the whole family at Christmas which I’m excited about.
How long have you worked at Rockthorn? If you’ve worked other roles in the industry, what were they?
I have worked here since July 2023. This is my first position in the industry.
What made you interested in your current role?
I honestly was not super interested in the role when I first heard about it! A recruiter put me in touch with Rockthorn, but I was used to working from home, so I initially agreed to the interview as practice. The minute I walked into the office, the atmosphere just pulled me in. It is full of energy and positivity and the team were super welcoming and supportive. Now I cannot imagine doing anything else. We have the best team here that I have ever worked with.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I like problem-solving and building relationships with customers and suppliers. My colleagues are fab and are always looking for ways to improve what we do and how we do it. We are always busy and face challenges together for the best outcomes.
What is your favourite thing about your job?
My lovely colleagues! I never get the Sunday dread that I used to get. I can always say when I’m struggling to resolve an issue, and I know I have the full support of my team.
Do any challenges come with your job? How do you combat them?
There are many challenges. Mainly managing the workload. We are growing at an incredible rate now! And it’s super exciting to be a part of such an energetic and driven team who always do their best to deliver an incredible service. We are all included in Rockthorn’s success and feel truly valued and appreciated in our roles. I chase aged debt, so that can be challenging at times, but we have really positive relationships with our customers, so it’s never really bad!
Do you have any favourite moments from your time at Rockthorn?
Christmas is a really lovely time at Rockthorn. We have lots of decorations up and lots of events planned in for the festive period. We are all taking our kids to the circus together in December, and we have the Christmas party, too. At Halloween, we took all of our children to Bewilderwood. They all get on so well! Cheesy as it sounds, we are a weird little family!
